About
That’s me! María Fernández Romero, a digital product designer based in Madrid.
I have been creating global banking experiences at BBVA Holding by working alongside teams from different countries, for three years. Also, I teach strategic and ethical design at Mr Marcel School.
Previously, I worked as a Data Protection & IT Lawyer auditing new digital products, which let me find my passion for design.

CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATOR
BBVA ∙ 2021
I participated, as UX designer, launching the first carbon footprint calculator for retail customers that is implemented by a bank in Spain. The aim of this project was defining a new feature that helped retail clients to be more sustainable.
In a fully Agile environment, we conducted co-creation sessions, benchmark, proof of concept, and developed prototypes using Miro, Sketch and Invision. My main task consisted of designing the wireframes that defined the feature from scratch and iterating the prototype, using BBVA’s design system and defining the corresponding user cases of the MVP.
Also, I collaborated with the research team, from conducting user interviews to validate the first prototype to defining the user personas.

BBVA DESIGN TEAM’S SITE
BBVA ∙ 2020
This project consisted of redesigning the BBVA global design team’s website, alongside another UX designer. Our job was to redefine the content and information architecture to make it more useful for designers globally, as well as to give it a new, fresher visual appearance, since it also represents the team externally.
We carried out a brief guerrilla investigation and coordinated regularly with the different areas of the team that were responsible for every section. We also coordinated with developers and reviewed the results in production.

DESIGN WEDNESDAY PODCAST
BBVA ∙ 2020-2023
“Design Wednesday podcast” is a new format for a series of design dissemination events that BBVA has been organizing for years for the spanish design community.
I have been leading the podcast for more than two years, defining the topics, participants, script and co-hosting.
It premiered in September 2020, with monthly episodes that features collaborators with a long professional career that talk about current issues in the design sector.
At the moment, the podcast is listened in more than 40 countries monthly and we’ve been growing +45% our listeners base every year.

[The information about this project is subject to a non-disclosure agreement]
I was involved from the beginning in this huge strategic design challenge: creating a vision to evolve the relationship model with retail customers through the app, to get a more close and personalized relation. For a year, the design team consisted of three designers that carried out tasks from research, workshops, defining frameworks to prototyping and coordinating with the different product teams and collaborating with the Artificial Intelligence Factory.
We got to restructure from scratch the app, introducing the new principles that would inspire the experience and integrating the needs of the different countries and programs.
Finally, we managed to make the vision tangible in a prototype of the new retail app and we executed its prototyping and lead the coordination with the different geographies and projects of the organization.
Documenting BBVA’s global design system

[The information about this project is subject to a non-disclosure agreement]
I was part of the Experience team, composed by more than 10 designers dedicated to maintain and update the global design system. During this time, I learnt how to work with components and the Sketch’s libraries.
My main tasks were related to the documentation of the design system, mainly preparing and updating documentation of the components in the app’s library and keeping record of the user experience patterns that are being generated globally in the company.
